Cattle germ plasm resources are invaluable as they constitute the most important foundation for animal improvement. Once lost, they are lost forever. Breed extinction is an invisible and irreversible process. In the present socio- economic context, only love and interest in breed are not enough. The breed and agricultural environment around it must pay for the farmers who maintain them. In times to come, environmental degradation and energy depletion threaten the mankind and there is no alternative but to turn to livestock based agriculture, more importantly focused on cattle. To achieve this the performance of the breed should be improved which is the best insurance for the breed conservation in the home tract. It is high time our premium and majestic breeds like Ongole are brought back to accelerate farmers livelihoods which are under great stress and strain as evidenced by growing number of suicides over years.

" BREEDING BULLS " are the nucleus for any cattle breeding herd or village herd. Even in recent past the village agri-system used to support and promote selection and maintenance of superior breeding bulls in every village. The bulls were occupying prime place in the village agricultural hierarchy. With the advent of modern agriculture, mono-cropping, hybrid/genetically modified seeds, mechanization of agriculture, erratic monsoons, uncertain dry land agriculture etc. have doomed existence of animal agriculture and the breeding bulls almost disappeared. The sustainable agriculture jeopardized and famers have become more and more vulnerable. Tractors, machinery, exotic breeds has almost totally replaced our valuable multi-purpose desi breeds of cattle and they are on the verge of total extinction. The cattle census indicates massive decline in their numbers especially working males and breeding bulls.

The KRISHIBHARATHAM TRUST has understood the seriousness of the issue and taken up herculean task of improving and conserving the famous Ongole breed. The mighty Ongole breed has proved its worth for milk and meat production across 44 different nations across the universe. This breed is a major contributor to GDP in countries like Brazil, Argentina etc. Our Objectives in this project will be as follows: 1. Identify elite farmers maintaining superior Ongoles in the breeding tract. 2. Organise them into district wise clusters. 3. Support them to maintain superior bulls, feed them optimally, felicitate exchange of germ plasm, provide them best possible germ plasm from across the world. 4. Help all the Ongole farmers across AP and Telangana to utilize these superior germ plasm and bring in overall improvement and conservation.
